Rishi Agastya: The complete lifestory and his contributions

· Amar Granth

Agastya is one of the Saptarishi, the seven great sages of Hindu tradition — a Vedic seer, the father of Tamil grammar, and a central figure in the Ramayana. Revered across India for his wisdom and his credited contributions to science, language, and medicine, Agastya remains one of the most widely worshipped rishis today.

Sage Agastya is one of the renowned saints in India, born to Sage Pulasthya (of the order of Sapta Rishi) and the celestial maiden Urvashi. He is also called "Kuda Muhi", meaning born in a pot, from a legend where Lord Varuna and Lord Mitra deposited their seeds into a pot during a sacred ritual. His wife was Lopamudra, a princess of Vidarbha, and their son Drdhasyu is said to have learned the Vedas while still in the womb.

Ashrams and the Ramayana: Sage Agastya's ashram is said to have been located variously in Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, or Tamil Nadu. In the Ramayana, Agastya is described as commanding the Vindhya Mountain to lower itself so the sun, moon, and living beings could pass over it, and he bestowed bow and arrows to Rama before his battle with Ravana.

Contributions to Knowledge: Agastya is mentioned in all four Vedas and authored hymns 1.165 to 1.191 of the Rigveda around 1200 BCE, running a Vedic school of his own. In Tamil culture, he is revered as the father of language, with temples dedicated to him throughout Tamil Nadu. He is also credited as the father of martial arts and Varma, an ancient science of healing.

Innovations in Science: Sage Agastya is reputed to have invented the battery over 4000 years ago in Bharat, with his text the Agastya Samhita describing power generation, the splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen, and the use of electricity for electroplating metals. For this, he is honoured with the title "Kumbodhbhav", meaning "Battery Born". His contributions to spirituality, science, and societal values continue to resonate throughout Indian history today.
